String Theory: A Meeting of the Hearts

When I was a kid, my dad took me to the doctor. Normal check-up, nothing wrong. The hearing portion of the test yielded an interesting (symbolic) result though. I entered the sound-proof booth and put the bulky headphones over my ears. The doctor—her first name was Happy and she was Sri Lankan—told me to raise my hand each time I heard a tone. And that I'd know it when I heard it. Okay. I listened. I didn't raise my hand for a time but then, *ding*. I raised my hand. I began hearing more. I raised it again. And more. And then the test was over. The strange thing about it though, I'd heard each tone throughout the test. Sometimes the pitch was so low that I thought I was just "hearing things". But I did indeed hear it. I realized this and as I exited the booth, tried to tell them. I tried to let 'em know that I'd heard each one, but I don't think the point came across. I thought I'd failed the test.

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)

The Bible contains the very heart of God. And it speaks volumes. Struggle with it. Wrestle with it. Tune your mind and your heart to the perfect pitch of the word of God. It doesn't matter the translation (it wasn't written in English). Whatever you need is there within the leaves. "Thy rod and Thy staff, They comfort me." (Psalm 23:4, emphasis mine) He's speaking here, of God's word, but David was a musician after all.

*Ding* Strike a tuning fork and you get pure, perfect pitch. Then the sound dies down. Did you ever notice how the laws of music are ever-present? Part of the fabric of Creation. Right there in the ether with math and physics. Harmonics and acoustics dance on the (super)strings. The Holy Spirit is much the same way. Music may be invisible to our eyes (much like Him), but it can be one of the most powerful forces in the universe. And when the Holy Spirit is respected and obeyed (and loved), much like the laws of music (I love music), you get perfect pitch. Your heart begins to beat with the timing of God. Everything in your life is attuned to the rhythm of His leading and life becomes a glorious musical.

Jesus' heart beats with the frequency of the Holy Spirit. And the more that we look to Him in love, worship and humility, the more our hearts will resonate with His. The thing about this heart resonance, though, is that it won't die down. It'll get louder. More resonant. Brighter. Kinda like this, but musically: "But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." Or perfect pitch.

And once you hear it, you begin to realize that you were hearing it all along...

"Then Samuel answered, Speak; for Thy servant heareth." (1 Samuel 3:10)
