"He also shall by my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before Him." (Job 13:16) It takes all our strength (which most times isn't much) to simply come to the Lord. Job states it plain when he says what he does regarding the hypocrite. The person who, for whatever reason, isn't single-minded when dealing with God. Jesus says a similar thing:
"For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." (John 3:21)
So whatever can we do? John says "if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things." (1 John 3:20) He knows the reason why our heart vacillates. God knows the reasons why we're up one day and feeling like garbage the next. All the complexities of our circumstances, especially the ones into which we've fallen for lack of circumspection. And it makes Him no nevermind. Your state doesn't deter Him. The lack of acknowledgement of such, might however. And although it doesn't change His love for you, your perception of it, my perception, will be askew. He'll love us through it, we just won't know it the same.
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
Double-mindedness is the culprit. I like to reduce things by half, but I'm loathe to call our mind the other half to our heart. I dunno. When Jesus recreated our spirit, He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us clear out our mind so that we live in accordance with the spiritual reality we now walk in. This is hard. God doesn't say He'll keep back the tide of past mistakes and events from slowly encroaching. He does say, however, that He won't lay on you more than you can handle. But the truth is, you can handle it. And if you've lived a life of hypocrisy and double-mindedness (I'm just going to say: lying), God will help you quit. But it's one of those things that is black or white. You have to stop sometime. Shades of gray are neither here nor there. Aim for the white (truth) you do see and He'll sweep the black away even as He uncovers depths to you you never knew were there.
Notice Job. While God testifies to the veracity of his character before and after his ordeal (see 1:8, 42:7), Job still says and does what is required to obtain "salvation". Just come to God.
